Week 1 – Throwing a beanbag is improvising

Snapchat-108350695411-168x300Improvisation, love it or hate it? It is not my favourite thing to do within the dance world. However, by the end of the session I felt relaxed, and I enjoyed the session because I was not panicking like I normally would. I felt that I reacted like this due to me reading Dear Practice… The experience of improvising. I think it helped me because I kept these thoughts in mind throughout: don’t think about it, let go, and mistakes can become openings. Before the session, I was nervous because I did not know what to expect, and I did not expect to be doing what we did. Someone stated that they felt like a kid again doing the exercise and I agreed with them, it was just a fun game. The exercise was throwing a bean bag to one another, and playing by the rules set. If I put the exercise into perspective it is just throwing and catching, what is so hard about that? Although I am deciding on the distance between myself and my partner, how far to throw the bean bag, and whether to throw under-arm or over-arm. My body automatically did what it wanted without me having to think about it. Technically this is improvising even though we were not dancing. It was a strange feeling, but I was intrigued because I realised that we improvise all the time, even non-dancers are improvising. I cannot wait for what is in store next time.
